Aging can be controlled by removing the layers of dead skin to give way to new, younger-looking skin. Anti-aging exfoliants, therefore, achieve this goal by sloughing off dead skin cells, and opening up skin pores. Removing the dead cells and their debris from the skin, in fact, enables the latter to expose a fresh layer of cells, eventually leaving the epidermis younger and brighter. Exfoliants vary in quality and the best ones are those with fine grains because they are delicate on the skin. For users with mature skin, exfoliants with alpha or beta-hydroxy acids are recommended.
